RSPS eco vs spawn: two completely different games
5 May 2026 · MMOLove TeamRuneScape private servers (RSPS) come in two fundamentally different flavours: economy servers and spawn servers. They share a client and a skill set, but they're almost completely different games. Picking the wrong one for your goals wastes a lot of time.
Economy servers
Economy (eco) servers replicate the OSRS or RS3 progression loop: you skill, boss, and trade. The economy is player-driven. Gear costs real in-game effort to obtain. End-game bossing and PvM are the goal.
Best for: players who loved original OSRS grinds — Inferno, raids, skilling milestones — and want to do them in a community that's not on the official servers. Expect weeks of progression before late-game content.
Red flags: if the server has pay-to-win gear in the donor shop, the economy is already broken. Check before you start.
Spawn servers
Spawn (or "pk") servers give players everything instantly. Max gear, all items available at spawn. The game is 100% PvP — tribridding (simultaneously using melee, ranged, and mage) and PKing mechanics. Progress means getting better at the combat system, not grinding items.
Best for: players who want pure PvP and already understand the combat meta. The learning curve is steep — spawn servers are not beginner-friendly.
Red flags: dead PKing zones. If the PvP hotspots aren't populated during peak hours, there's no game.
Hybrid servers
Some RSPS attempt to bridge both modes — a live economy plus dedicated PvP zones. These can work well but tend to fall apart if the player population is too small to sustain both.
Which to choose
If you've never played RSPS before, start with an eco server. The progression gives you something to work toward and teaches you the server's community before you need to compete. If you're a returning player who just wants PvP, spawn is faster and more focused.
