What is a private game server?

20 May 2026 · MMOLove Team

A private server (sometimes called an emulator or fan server) is a community-run version of an online game, hosted independently of the official publisher. People run them to preserve a beloved era of a game, to add custom content and rates, or simply to keep a world alive after the official servers change or shut down.

Why people play them

  • Nostalgia. Many private servers recreate a specific historical version of a game — the patch you fell in love with — that the official game has long since left behind.
  • Custom rates and content. Higher XP rates, new dungeons, bespoke classes, fresh economies. Server teams build the experience they wish existed.
  • Community. The best servers are small enough that the GMs actually know their players, and events feel personal.

How they stay healthy

A good private server keeps things fair: strong anti-cheat, little or no pay-to-win, and an active team that listens. That's exactly what a healthy ranking should reflect — which is why MMOLove ranks by genuine player hearts, never by who paid the most.
